Let’s Keep It Nice

These photographs were made in the United States during a one-year Fulbright teacher exchange in 1994-95. I taught high school English in Austin, Texas but travelled as much as I could during weekends and school holidays. The 35mm transparencies have remained mostly unseen, in boxes, for 30 years. I only recently decided to scan, view and share them. Photographer Henry Wessel Jr. advocated putting negatives away for a lengthy period before printing them, in order to disassociate the subjective, pleasurable experience of clicking the shutter from the more critical process of evaluating the quality of the image. These photographs were taken when I was half the age I am now, so it has been an interesting experience looking at what my 30 year old eyes saw.
